Pair of Louis XVI Style Marquetry Cabinets
France
19th Century
Floral and bird motif marquetry, with gilt-bronze details
Marble tops
Cm 110 high x 151 wide x 40 deep
A matched pair of 19th century French Louis XVI style double door side cabinets with intricate multi-wood floral motif marquetry and gilt-bronze details. The central oval image area of each door is slightly convex, and the sides of the cabinets are serpentine, so there is a three dimensional sculptural richness to the furniture that further exemplifies their visual impact. The bronze details are distinctly neoclassical, with various female figure heads and rosettes, as well as caryatids "supporting" the top front corners of the cabinets. The tops are single pieces of white marble. The locks are functional, and the cabinets come with their original keys. The interiors of both cabinets are nicely finished, and one (see pictures) has a single adjustable shelf, and the other has two adjustable shelves, offering a good amount of practical storage space.
