Spanish Arab Style Copper Jug with Decorative Seam
Spain
18th Century
Hand-hammerd copper with iron details
Cm 43 high x 30 diameter
With its Arab-influenced domed lid and geometric decoration, this 18th century Spanish copper container was originally made for common household use. Around the centre of the jug at its widest point, is a visible "dovetail seam" where two pieces of copper were brazed together to form the curve. Although a practical part of the metalworking process, the gold color and zig-zagging pattern of the seam also add aesthetic appeal. The wrought iron handle is attached with large hand-hammered rivets, and the rounded body of the container is raised on a sturdy riveted spreading foot.
